*Homework Begins: September 17*
The primary goal of homework in second grade is to help students develop strong work habits, build study skills, and assume responsibility for work done outside of the classroom. We have a very long school day, and I believe children need family time and time to play, unwind, and use their imaginations during those few hours between school and bedtime. Homework will be kept short and simple. Students will have a short reading worksheet, a math sheet with four questions each night, and will be expected to read for 20 minutes each day (before school, after school, and including the reading assignment). Homework should take no more than 30 minutes each day. Homework will be turned in and reviewed each morning. Occasionally we will have special projects that will be completed at home. These projects will take the place of the reading assignment for the week. Homework is not something that should create stress for your family. If something about the homework routine is not working for you and your child, please let me know, and we can figure out something that works.
Reading
On Mondays students will bring home a brief reading passage. They will use this passage to complete comprehension activities on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Below is an example of the reading homework that will be sent home at around week 31 of school. Students are expected to read for at least 20 minutes each day, including the reading homework assignment. Students may read books from school, home, the public library, or books online (i.e. Raz-Kids, Epic Books). Students only homework over the weekend or on holiday breaks is to read for 20 minutes each day.
Math
Each night students will complete a math worksheet will four math problems. This sheet will be a spiral review of math skills covered throughout the year. Below is an example of the math homework that will be sent home each night. If your child does not understand a question on their math homework, have them attempt the question and then I will go over the question with him or her the next day.
